Are you left or right handed?

I recently discovered that August 13th is known as Left-Handers Day.

I’ve missed the celebrations this year, but I have found out some interesting facts about our special group of people….

Approximately 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. Left-handed people have trouble using right-handed tools, which has led to a lot of discrimination from the time of the Industrial Revolution onwards, when tools and machines were mass produced for right-handed people. Children who displayed left-handed tendencies were beaten and had their dominant hand tied behind their backs so that they had to use their right hand.

Some of your favourite celebrities are Lefties!
Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie all have dominant left hands. Many deceased celebrities, like Marilyn Monroe, Kurt Cobain, and Jimi Hendrix were left-handed too. Maybe being left-handed is the secret to success!

Lefties are good at art.
Research has shown that left-handed people may really be more artistically inclined. There is evidence that lefties are better at divergent thinking, and a survey of over 2,000 left-handed people showed that the majority of lefties were drawn to careers in art and music.

Lefties…..
Make up between 5% and 10% of the population (depending on who you ask)
More likely to have allergies
More prone to migraines
More likely to be insomniacs
Three times more likely to become alcoholics – the right side of the brain has a lower tolerance to alcohol.
More likely to be on extreme poles of the intelligence scale
Tend to reach puberty 4 to 5 months later than right handers
More likely to suffer stuttering and dyslexia
Twice as likely to be a man
Better at 3D perception and thinking
Better at multi-tasking

Lefties make especially good baseball players, tennis players, swimmers, boxers and fencers (almost 40% of the top tennis players are lefties)

More bizarre left handed statistics…..
Lefties –
Adjust to seeing underwater more quickly
Less able to roll their tongue than a righty
Nails grow faster on the left hand than the right.

Try this test to see how left handed you are.  I scored 84%.

  1. I’m a leftie, scored 74% as I, oddly, do righthanded sports stuff…my interesting leftie fact is that every second child in our family tree going back to my great-great grandmother ( I can’t go any further) have been left-handed and several of us, skipping a generation each time. have some traits that could be considered as educational special needs.. my son seems to have a cumulation of all of all the odd traits, bless his cotton socks! Really, I do believe there is something in the left-handed gait that narrows down to an intensity that is is unique… it just needs to be channelled in some circumstances… it’s very interesting, I do believe there is much to be analysed in this…

  2. I do many things with either hand, so I took the test you linked to and found myself wishing for a “both” or “it depends” option. I got 48% lefty as a result, which they classified as “fairly ambidextrous” – I often wonder if I was a natural lefty trained as a righty.
