What’s your favourite comfort food?

My 31 day blog challenge.    Day 30 – “favourite comfort food”

According to Wikipedia, comfort food is ‘food which provides a nostalgic or sentimental value to the consumer, and is often characterized by its high caloric nature, high carbohydrate level, and simple preparation. The nostalgia may be specific to either the individual or a specific culture. It is often food associated with the security of childhood, like mother’s poached egg or famous chicken soup. These foods are believed to be a great coping mechanism for rapidly soothing negative feelings’.

Well, I would say my favourite comfort food is chocolate, and meets all the above criteria, but I can’t reply ‘chocolate’ to every food related prompt. So I’m going to say my favourite comfort food is sausages and mash. Sausages are sometimes referred to as ‘bangers’.  I think this a particularly British dish, as nowhere else in the world can you get sausages as good as those sold in Britain. If there were no sausages available. I would happily eat a bowl of mashed potato on its own, but it would be better with the addition of a thick, dark, beef flavoured home-made onion gravy, and peas.

Lots of British pubs have sausages and mash on their menu, and I often choose this if we are eating out at lunchtime.

I think comfort food is a very cultural thing- if you look at the Wikipedia link, it tells you what other countries would regard as comfort food for them. It ranges from red lentil soup in Turkey, beef noodle soup in Taiwan, croque monsieur in France, to clear beetroot soup with forest mushroom tortellini in Poland.

What’s your idea of comfort food?
